James S. Gold, vice president of marketing at the New York Times Regional Media Group, expresses a view that contradicts the one Robert Cauthorn aired during the morning. Mari Pascual, editor of técnicas de prensa, Ifra's Spanish-language monthly magazine, is the main person behind this moblog. Mari has been using her mobile phone to take photos, audio, and video at Publish Asia 2006 since the Newsplex workshop started Monday morning. Via Bluetooth and the web, she sends the photos, text, and clips to the TextAmerica server. Anton Jolkovski in Darmstadt and Kerry Northrup in South Carolina access Mari's contributions via a web interface and edit the entries.

Margaret Lim, center, executive chairman of Carat Group, says before selecting a medium for a specific campaign, her company examines various factors, such as the profile of the advertised company, the message it wants to convey, and so on. Once that analysis is complete, Carat decides which particular newspaper or other outlet will be used for the campaign. So newspapers compete first with other media and later with other papers. Lim asks publishers to provide ad agencies and media planners with data about their readers, so they can better understand the newspaper medium.

This is not your average weblog. Web logs are a kind of online diary or journal increasingly popular with individuals as an outlet for personal expression. There are an
estimated 1.8 million currently active on the Internet, according to Blogcensus.net, Blogcount and other sources. The typical web log, or blog as they are called in Internet speak,
consists of postings in chronological order, the most recent first, about whatever topic or person the site focuses on. Blogs are typically updated from several times a day to once every few days. Posting are usually made from a computer using software that does not require much if any technical skill. People browsing through blogs often are able to
insert their own comments in response to the blogger's. Moblogs are a particular type of blog designed to work with mobile phones, especially phones with cameras. Instead of using a computer, postings are created by sending a multimedia message or email from the phone to an online address tied to the blog. When the email arrives at
a service such as TextAmerica, its subject line is automatically turned into a headline for the new posting and the message text becomes the posting itself. Any attached picture is inserted into the posting as a thumbnail linked to the full-size image. A bit more expertise is required for moblogging than regular blogging because text has to be input using the phone's 9-digit keypad. This is a skill increasingly common since the advent of SMS text messaging. The process is also aided by predictive text technology built into many
phones. The advantage of moblogging is that posts can be made from
anywhere at anytime and often within moments after a picture is taken or an event happens.Moblog popularity is growing in line with skyrocketing mobile phone
sales, reaching a record 516 million handsets in 2003, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. One in five mobile phones sold today is a camera phone, double the ratio a year ago. The second-generation of camera phones now available can also record video with audio. Most mobile phone networks around the world have or are being upgraded to
higher bandwidths to accommodate the fact that mobiles phones are being adopted as a tool for more than just conversing. News organizations are taking notice of this trend. And Ifra, through its Newsplex research initiative, has pioneered the use of moblogs as a
professional publishing environment with the application of mainstream editorial standards and workflows. There is a complete team of editors and journalists behind this
Ifra moblog. A newsflow editor manages the overall process, directing
the reporting team toward the ultimate goal of providing a distinctively comprehensive and engaging presentation of this event. Storybuilders edit and categorize the constant flow of submissions from the mobile journalists all the while taking additional information from
them over the same phones being used for newsgathering and delivery. And a new type of hybrid informatics journalist called a newsresourcer augments the moblog submissions with research and online links adding even greater depth and breadth to the presentation.
Individually, each entry in this moblog documents a single aspect of this conference -- an attendee's comment, a speaker's summary, an exhibitor's explanation, busy aisles, quiet corners, people energized, tired, talking, planning, confused, informed. Each entry stands alone as a piece of micro-journalism. Collectively, however, the entries accumulate to eventually form an intricate mosaic revealing the larger trends and tones of this intricately multifaceted occasion. Both on-site and remote visitors can interact with the moblog by
browsing it online, downloading the pictures, adding their own comments and even submitting their own entries via mobile or email.Overall, Ifra's moblog process melds some of the best attributes of in-depth, wide-ranging, detail-oriented newspaper reporting and
real-time, putting-you-at-the-scene, visually engaging television coverage, leveraging the capabilities and reach of online with the latest advances in mobile. It is a thoroughly convergent media experience.Kerry J. Northrup
Director of Publications, Ifra

The readers are now also the editors: "Communities circled around user-generated content are growing in success and penetration. Wikipedia and all this kind of sites are the most visited on the web. But newspapers seem not to understand this factor and this is why websites like Google and the mentioned Wikipedia are the most visited in Arabic countries, Japan, France, all over the world. Except Norway, which has a newspaper at the top of the most-visited website list - VG. Maybe (it is) because we let our readers contribute to our newspaper sites ... in a very easy way."

Datin Linda Ngiam, deputy group general manager of Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd, thinks Publish Asia is the right platform to find out where a newspaper can take its business in the future. "In Malaysia, circulation is not such a big problem as in other countries. Circulation is not falling here. Moritz Wuttke, CEO Asia-Pacific Publicitas Promotion Network and Emphasis, reminds publishers that advertisers expect data about the efectiveness of advertisements in newspaper pages and encourages them to provide this kind of data in order to keep from losing ad revenues. He also presents the print-ad concept, a way to compete with Google, which consists of placing ads related to the topic covered in every page of the newspaper. "Close to an article about Californian wines, you can place a column with ads that have to do with wine," he says.

At Monday's pre-conference workshop, entitled "Newsplex: Audience-Focused and Convergent Journalism," Hidayat Jati, editor in chief of "Parenting" (Indonesia), asks IfraNewsplex Director Dietmar Schantin for an example of convergence drawing young people to a print paper. Schantin responds that the Tampa (Florida) Tribune has achieved a 2-percent circulation increase since it implemented convergence with its TV station and web site. Of course, it is difficult to know how many of the new readers are young people. On the other hand, one must consider how the paper's circulation would likely have developed without convergence.

Mark Challinor, European president of the International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA) and managing director of Buzz Mobile Marketing Ltd., encourages publishers to embrace print, web and mobile platforms in order to achieve success: "Mobiles are part of people lives. So truth is that, that during the London bombings in July last year, the BBC website received around 1,000 images of people who were in the attacked areas and took pictures with their camera phones. Six months later, in the north of London, there was an explosion which provoked huge clouds of smoke. The BBC website got 6,000 pictures taken with mobile phones. Newspapers can not overlook the power of mobile phones, neither their possibilities."

He encourages publishers to fulfill new audiences' requirements: "There are many publications trying to inform in real time with SMS alerts, 24/7 web sites... because if you don't move with the times and give audiences what they want, you won't only be left behind but also forced to leave the game. Change is not any more a possibility but a real necessity."

Ali Al-Assam, managing director of KnowledgeView Ltd, asks Espen Egil Hansen how VG protects itself to avoid readers sending in copyrighted photos and how the newspaper rewards the citizen journalists. Hansen answers: "If someone send us a photo which is protected, we delete it as soon as we find out. If this person sends a second protected content piece, we just kick him out from our site and restrict his or her access forever. As for the rewards, people who send a photo or comment that we end up using for our printed version receive an economical reward, but not the ones whose collaborations only appear in the web forum... Anyway, we have realised that people just want to participate and are not so interested in the possible rewards."

During the first breakout session titled "Controlling Production Cost: Newsprint Standardisation and Materials Compatibility," on the second day of the Publish Asia 2006 conference, David Keenan, vice president of Newsprint Technical Service, Abitibi Consolidated, explains the interaction between ink and water. Abitibi has developed a device that measures the moisture in the roll of paper and in the printed copy to control dampening, which can provoke web breaks and sheet curls. "Newspapers and paper suppliers need to work together to get a standard for the newsprint," he says.

Paul Mampilli, from the credit card company Visa, explains how this huge brand advertises in various media. "We spend a lot of time thinking how to advertise in order to be more widely used than our competitors. We know that customers make their choice, when they have more than a credit and debit card, at the pay point, depending on their experience, what they are told... So the pay point is the best place for us to advertise. However, we use other media, and we use print media when we want to spread a particular message," says Mampilli.
